Tyre Safety Matters – Every Journey Starts with the Right Pressure
At AIR-serv, we're proud to support TyreSafe, the UK's dedicated tyre safety charity, in helping drivers stay safe on our roads.
The latest figures from the Department for Transport show a concerning increase in collisions linked to illegal, defective and underinflated tyres. In 2025 alone:
201 people were killed or seriously injured in incidents involving illegal, defective or underinflated tyres – a 19% increase on the previous year.
Overall casualties linked to tyre defects rose to 667, with 447 reported collisions involving defective tyres.
More than 2 million vehicles fail their MOT every year due to tyre-related defects, highlighting how common preventable tyre issues remain.
These statistics are a powerful reminder that tyre maintenance isn't just about protecting your vehicle – it's about protecting yourself, your passengers and everyone else on the road.
A Simple Check Can Save Lives
The good news is that tyre safety is one of the easiest aspects of vehicle maintenance to manage.
Regularly checking your tyres only takes a few minutes and can help improve:
Road safety
Vehicle handling and braking
Fuel efficiency
Tyre life
Electric vehicle range
Compliance with UK legal requirements
Remember the A.C.T. Checks
TyreSafe encourages every driver to carry out the simple A.C.T. check every month and before any long journey.
A – Air Pressure
Underinflated tyres generate more heat, wear out more quickly and reduce your vehicle's handling and braking performance.
Always check tyre pressures when the tyres are cold and inflate them to the manufacturer's recommended pressure. AIR-serv air machines make it quick and easy to keep your tyres correctly inflated.
C – Condition
Inspect your tyres for:
Cuts or cracks
Bulges or blisters
Embedded objects such as nails or screws
Uneven wear
If you spot any damage, have your tyres inspected by a qualified professional as soon as possible.
T – Tread
The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre around its entire circumference.
However, safety experts recommend replacing tyres before they reach the legal limit, particularly in wet weather where braking performance can be significantly reduced as tread wears down.
AIR-serv's Commitment to Safer Roads
Every day, thousands of motorists use AIR-serv inflation equipment at petrol forecourts, supermarkets and convenience locations across the UK.
Our mission goes beyond providing reliable tyre inflation equipment. We are committed to helping drivers understand the importance of regular tyre maintenance and making tyre pressure checks as convenient as possible.
Correct tyre pressures can make a real difference to road safety, vehicle performance and the environment.
Join Us in Supporting Tyre Safety
By taking a few minutes each month to check your tyres, you're helping to reduce the risk of preventable incidents on our roads.
Together with TyreSafe, we're working towards a future where no one is harmed because of illegal or poorly maintained tyres.
Check your tyres. Check your pressure. Protect every journey
